Vitalijs Jascisens

About:
Vitalijs Jascisens is Research Associate at BICEPS and an assistant professor at Higher School of Economics (HSE) in Moscow. He holds PhD in Economics from the Toulouse School of Economics (TSE), MPhil in economics from TSE, BSc in economics and business administration from Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, and BSc in physics from the University of Latvia. During his PhD studies, he was also a visiting researcher at the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (SITE). Vitalijs’ research interests primarily lie in development economics, industrial organisation and public finance. In particular, he has developed an expertise in using large-scale administrative data to analyse various policy failures.

About:
Morten Hansen is Head of Economics Department, Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, Vice-President of the Latvian European Community Studies Association (LECSA), Research Associate at BICEPS and Research Fellow at the Centre for European and Transition Studies (CETS) at University of Latvia. He was formerly with EuroFaculty, University of Latvia and has resided in Latvia since 1994. He holds an MSc in economics from Aarhus University, Denmark, where he specialized in econometrics.

Mihails Hazans

About:
Mihails Hazans is professor at the Faculty of Business, Management and Economics (University of Latvia), research fellow at the IZA Institute of Labor Economics, Global Labor Organization (GLO) fellow, and research associate at BICEPS. Prof. Hazans’ current research focuses on migration, ethnic minorities, teleworking, informal employment and envelope wages. He has published on migration, commuting, economics of education, ethnic minorities, informal employment, labour supply, active labour market policies, working conditions, job search, unemployment risk, and determinants of earnings.
In 2011, Mihails Hazans received the annual “Spidola award in economics” for his research on emigration from Latvia. One of his publications has been listed by the Latvian Academy of Sciences among the top 10 achievements of Latvian science in 2012.

Arnis Sauka

About:
Dr. Arnis Sauka is Research Associate at BICEPS, Associate Professor at SSE Riga and the Director of the Centre for Sustainable Business at SSE Riga. He has a PhD from the University of Siegen (Germany) and has been a Visiting Scholar at Jönköping International Business School (Sweden) and University College London (U.K.). Arnis main research interests include the shadow economy, productive and unproductive entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship policy making and competitiveness, and entrepreneurship development in a transition context. Drawing on his academic work that have been published in a number of peer-reviewed journals and books and presented at numerous European and North American conferences, he has also been extensively involved in applied research. This has included contracted reports for the OECD and Eurofound as well as for various industry associations and NGOs in Latvia and other countries. Arnis Sauka is co- author of the annual Shadow Economy Index for the Baltic Countries (with Prof. Tālis J. Putniņš, since 2009) and he has participated in and managed various EU-funded international projects. Arnis has also been involved in management and consultancy activities, including working as Vice Rector for Studies and Research at Ventspils University College (2011-2013), a board member of the NGO BASE (Business Against the Shadow Economy) (since 2015), and a senior consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers (2008). From 2011-2014 he was Advisor to the Minister of Health on Financial and Economic Issues. Arnis is also an Expert in Management Science and an Expert in Economics at the Latvian Council for Science (2011-2014; 2014-2017) as well as a member of the promotion committee of the doctoral programme implemented by the BA School of Business and Finance and RISEBA University.

Konstantins Benkovskis

About:
Konstantins Benkovskis got a PhD in Economics from the University of Latvia in 2006. His current research activities focus in studies of international trade, non-price competitiveness, and global value chains. Konstantins Benkovskis combines lecturing at Stockholm School of Economics in Riga with an adviser position in the Monetary Policy Department of the Bank of Latvia. He is also the active member of the ESCB Competitiveness Research Network (CompNet).
