Maija Kāle

About:

Maija Kāle is a Research Fellow at BICEPS.  She holds a Ph.D. from the Faculty of Computer Science (now Faculty of Science and Technology) at the University of Latvia, where her research in ‘food computing’ focuses on reducing inefficiencies in the food sector and promoting healthier diets and more resilient food systems globally. Her research is interdisciplinary, integrating cognitive and social sciences, focusing on food systems, climate change, bioeconomy and circular economy, and increasingly on how traditional knowledge or intelligence intersects with new artificial intelligence(s) to shape the future(s) of food systems and other complex systems.

Maija holds an MA in Social Sciences from the University of Freiburg, which she completed through a study programme in India, South Africa and Germany. Maija’s undergraduate degree is in Business Administration from the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, where her thesis on environmental responsibility was published as an SSE Riga Working Paper.

Since 2007, Maija has worked with sustainability and digitalisation issues in various leadership and expert roles. Since 2016, Maija has worked as an Adviser at the Nordic Council of Ministers Office in Latvia and is also a member of Nordic Innovation’s Nordic Task Force for Diversity. In BICEPS, Maija works as a Research Consultant in various projects in Nordregio, the leading Nordic research institute within the broad research fields of regional development, policy and planning, including:

Sergejs Gubins

About:

Sergejs Gubins is Research Fellow at BICEPS. He holds a PhD degree in Economics from the VU University Amsterdam. He was a Postdoctoral Researcher at Bocconi University, Milan, before returning to Latvia as a Senior Research Fellow at the non-profit think-tank Certus. Gubins has a number of research papers published in peer-reviewed economic journals. Currently, there are several papers submitted to journals in a revise-and- resubmit stage. While at Certus, Gubins wrote on various policy-related economic topics. Among other, he wrote demographic projection study in which he assessed potential migration flows to and from Latvia through economic determinants. He has an extensive experience in analysis of large databases on individual-level. Gubins has received a number of awards for outstanding research and scholarships including the Huygens scholarship from the Dutch Government.

Nicolas Gavoille

About:

Nicolas Gavoille is Associate Professor at SSE Riga and a Research Fellow at BICEPS. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Rennes 1, France, and is a member of the European Public Choice Society, of the French Economic Association and of the Condorcet Center for Political Economy. Nicolas’ main research interests are in the field of public economics, labour economics, and political economy.

He published articles in peer-reviewed journals such as the European Economic Review, the European Journal of Political Economy, IMF Economic Review, Public Choice, Economics Letters, the International Review of Law and Economics, and the Journal of Institutional and Theoretical Economics.
